About Autism
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact with others, learn, and engage in behaviors. Symptoms of ASD typically become apparent within the first two years of life. However, diagnosis can occur at any age depending on when symptoms are recognized. Diagnostic criteria for ASD, focus on difficulties in communication and interaction with others, as well as repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. These symptoms can vary widely in their severity and impact on daily life. ASD is referred to as a spectrum disorder because it encompasses a broad range of symptoms and severity levels. Some individuals may have mild symptoms that allow them to function well in daily life with support, while others may have more significant challenges that require intensive intervention and support. People from all walks of life can be diagnosed with ASD. Current estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that 1 in 36 individuals are on the autism spectrum.
