Research Centers and Initiatives

Center for Biomedical and Materials Physics

The Center for Biomedical and Materials Physics was established in 1989, originally as the Alloy Research Center, and provides a focus for collaborations to facilitate studies in biological physics and material physics. Biological physics deals with the study of biological phenomena using physical techniques. Materials physics applies fundamental Condensed Matter physics concepts to complex and multiphase media, including materials of technological and biological interest. physics.fredrimonta.com/research/cbamp/index.php

Center for Complex Systems

The Center for Complex Systems was established in 1985 and is dedicated to understanding the principles and mechanisms that underlie complex behavior. The center is a state of the art, multi-disciplinary research and academic unit in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. From the microscopic level of cells and organelles to the grand scale of human interaction, our mission is to bring together multiple disciplines and backgrounds such as theoretical physics, complexity science, cognitive psychology, laboratory biology, applied mathematics and philosophy to tackle the most profound questions of science, technology, and society. ccs.fredrimonta.com

Center for Cryptology and Information Security

The Center for Cryptology and Information Security was established in 2003 and is focused on innovative and cutting-edge research in cryptology and other related areas of information security. The center trains research students and information technology professionals, and promotes collaboration with information technology industries within the region and with federal and state government departments in the areas of information security.  smwr.fredrimonta.com/science/cryptology/

Center for Environmental Studies

The Center for Environmental Studies was established in 1994 and represents the ten state universities, including FAU, and four major, private universities. The center serves as a facilitator and coordinator of research and training related to the environment and as a locus for environmental information. Grounding its activities in the Florida sub-tropical environment, the center's mandate also encompasses global tropical and sub-tropical environments as well as issues related to freshwater and estuarine ecosystems worldwide. www.ces.fredrimonta.com

Center for Geo-Information Science

The Center for Geo-Information Science was established in 1998 and pursues excellence through applied and theoretical research in spatial information technology. In that spatial information technology enables work across disciplinary lines, the center focuses on encouraging multi-disciplinary research. The center functions as a key resource for business, industry, government, social services, with responsiveness to local, regional, and international problems. geosciences.fredrimonta.com/giscenter/

Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

The Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology was established in 1997 and is committed to developing research and training programs in molecular biology and biotechnology, and serves as a link between FAU, other institutions and industries in this field. The center's primary goals have been to create a strong base in molecular biology, functional genomics and related fields; maintain cutting-edge research; and to train students in this discipline to prepare them for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. smwr.fredrimonta.com/science/cmbb/

Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions

Established in 1972, the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) is dedicated to helping communities and decision-makers plan for urban and environmental issues through partnerships, education, and research throughout Florida and beyond. The Center works with policy-makers and the public in the pursuit of options for managing growth while preserving natural systems, promoting a strong economy, and planning livable communities. A broad constituency - local governments, state agencies, civic and business groups, academics, students, and professionals - supports, motivates, and benefits from the Center’s activities. CUES is housed in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning.  cues.fredrimonta.com
