Lester E. Embree †
It is with great sadness that the philosophy department announces the passing of Professor Lester Embree on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Professor Embree was a world-renown expert in phenomenology and made many significant contributions to this field. He served on the faculty at Florida Atlantic University for over 30 years. Professor Embree will be missed by his students and by his many colleagues and friends worldwide.
Thomas F. Baxley †
It is with great sadness that the philosophy department announces the passing of another of its members, Professor Thomas F. Baxley, on February 23, 2017. Professor Baxley served as Chair of the department of philosophy for more than a decade, overseeing the department's growth into one of the strongest undergraduate philosophy programs in the Florida State University System. When he retired in 2003, after 35 years of service at Florida Atlantic University, he moved to Cochran, Georgia where he pursued his love of tennis, participating in many competitive matches. Tom is survived by his spouse, Carolyn Ackinclose, their five children, and seventeen grandchildren.
